I'm really quite a sceptical woman. I like to evaluate things scientifically and to base my decisions upon genuine evidence, which is certainly lacking in respect of the claims made for 'colon cleansing' products. I do not believe toxins actually concentrate in the small intestine or that food 'rots' there as some suppliers claim. It is irrational to believe that these products have any beneficial effect on rates of colorectal cancer - what we can say is that they are often used by people who make beneficial changes to their lifestyles at about the same time they commence colon cleansing courses. I'm not a clinician, but I do have a career where clinical evidence has to be taken very seriously and I am unaware of any credible clinical trials of these products. That said, I am aware that literally thousands of other people swear they have had life-changing results from these cleansers. I wouldn't have given the products a second thought had I not found myself in need of help.

At 38, life was was pretty good. I really enjoyed living in Scotland and had a great (non clinical) job at the hospital in the City. Look at the coloring of your mole or lesion. Do you see any areas that have varied colors such as tinges of blue, red, white, tan, pink or gray? A normal mole is an even shade of brown. Or light brown or tan.

Size of the mole - more often than not a melanoma is larger than one quarter inch measured across or in diameter. Sometimes they can be smaller but most are more than one quarter inch. A normal mole will usually stay the same shape, size and diameter.

Evolving which is the newest term when recognizing malignant melanoma means that the lesion or mole has changed in its size, shape and or color over time. Usually a short period of time. Normal moles generally stay the same shape for years.

Make sure to check your body regularly for any signs of moles, lesions or malignant melanoma. Be sure to have someone check the areas of your body that you cannot see like your back.

Modern research on chaga has mainly focused on its potential application as an anti-cancer remedy. In Russia, this usage was already approved as early as 1955 to treat lung, stomach, breast and cervical cancers. [122]

One modern study from 1998 showed that chaga extract did in fact inhibit growth of cervical cancer cell lines under lab conditions. [123] Another study from 1995 reported that an isolate of the active compound betulin first inhibited growth of melanoma cells in a lab, and then killed them. [124, 25]

Further research has confirmed that some of the active compounds of Siberian chaga do decrease cancer cell growth. [125, 126]

The black color of chaga is caused by betulin, a medicinally active compound that makes up 30% of the skin. [127] The lighter inside of the mushroom is rich in fungal lanostanes. So chaga tea may be more effective if made with the whole mushroom, including the skin.

Even better are chaga extracts that are made with not only the whole mushroom but also the mycelium, because the mycelium contains higher levels of medicinal proteins than the fruit body of the mushroom.

Do You Have A Delayed Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer Claim?

In cases involving the delayed diagnosis of prostate cancer most people focus only on whether the physician made a mistake. But this is only the first issue that an attorney must address when evaluating a potential claim. The other issue is whether there was any harm to the patient as a result of the physician's mistake, and if there was, was it the type of harm that would merit pursuing a claim.

It is usually easy to determine whether a physician had information, in the form of an elevated PSA test result or an abnormal digital examination, suggestive of possible prostate cancer. It is also usually fairly easy to determine the amount of delay. This is normally the difference between when the patient was diagnosed and when the physician first had the information about the abnormal PSA or digital examination results.

What may be more difficult to determine is the extent of the injury to the patient. Unless the PSA exceeds at least a 10.0 (anything above a 4.0 is considered high) or a bone scan reveals sign of metastasis, even if the cancer has a high Gleason score, most physicians would admit that it is impossible to determine the stage of the cancer without performing surgery. The examination of the specimen collected during the surgery determines whether the cancer had already spread beyond the prostate. Even with a PSA above a 10.0 it is still possible that the cancer is still contained and that surgery can be curative.

Consider a case where a physician performed a PSA blood test on his patient when the patient was 52 years old. The PSA level was 2.0 at that time. This level is generally considered to be well within the normal range. Two years later the physician repeated the PSA test on his patient. This time the result indicated a level of 4.2. This was marked as high in the report provided by the lab that conducted the blood analysis. The physician saw the patient four times over the next two and a half years without ever informing his patient of the abnormal test result or performing a follow-up PSA test. It was more than three years after the abnormal test result that the physician finally performed another PSA test. At this point the results indicated a PSA level of 5.25.

This was the first time the physician informed his patient of the prior elevated level. At this time, the physician referred the patient to a urologist. A biopsy revealed that he had cancer. Surgery revealed that the cancer had already spread to the seminal vesicles and there was evidence of vascular as well as perineal invasion. Given that the cancer had already began spreading beyond the prostate the surgery was not curative. The patient thus underwent hormone therapy. His PSA levels then began to rise post-operatively. This is indicates a poor prognosis making it unlikely that the patient will survive five years beyond the surgery.

The law firm that handled this matter reported that the medical malpractice claim on behalf of the patient and his wife was settled for $550,000. The patient was 60 years old at the time of the settlement. The agreement left the possibility of a wrongful death claim should the patient not survive beyond the applicable statute of limitations.

As this case illustrates, the nature of the injury to the patient was not known until the results of the surgery were reviewed and showed that the cancer had, in fact, already begun spreading outside the prostate. And it was not until the patient
s PSA levels began to rise post-operatively that the true extent of the injury was know. At that point the attorney is in a position to be able to fully evaluate the patient's claim. Notice that the law firm in this case limited the settlement only to the patient's medical malpractice claim.

Understanding the inevitable meaning of the post-surgical rise in the PSA they made certain to leave the possibility of a wrongful death claim open. Of course whether there will later be a wrongful death claim that can be pursued will depend on several factors including whether the patient dies as a result of the cancer or of some other cause and whether it happens during the time frame permitted by the applicable statutes of limitations and statute of repose.

Fortunately, the diagnosis was on time, and the owner "smart" dogs have been saved.

There are stories of such unusual behavior of the dog owners, who had been ill with cancer of internal organs.

Caroline Willis, together with colleagues from the hospital Amershama decided to test the hypothesis that a dog really capable of "diagnose" cancer.

Researchers have tried a group of dogs trained to determine the urine of patients with bladder cancer from healthy individuals.

The course lasted seven months. The experiment involved six dogs of various breeds. At the end of the seventh month the dogs were able to diagnose in 22 cases out of 54. This ratio represents 41% of success, that is many times more than an accidental coincidence (approximately 14%).

During the experiment, was an unusual story. All dogs unanimously pointed to the urine sample of a patient who had no bladder cancer. Doctors decided to examine it more carefully. And indeed, after further analysis, it turned out that the patient was sick with kidney cancer.

According to scientists, the best "diagnostician" showed a spaniel.

"Dogs can detect the smell of cancer, which is very difficult to catch all of today's existing chemical methods", - said scientist.

Researchers hope to create a chemical "map" of cancer which, in future, will be used to create special equipment for the diagnosis of the disease.

Unfortunately, all too often doctors simply assume that blood in the stool or rectal bleeding is the result of hemorrhoids, even after multiple complaints by the patient. Instead of referring the patient to a specialist (a gastroenterologist) or ordering tests, such as a colonoscopy, to rule out colon cancer, they tell the patient that there is nothing to worry about. If the patient died have colon cancer and it is not detected until one or two years later, it may progress to a stage 3 or a stage 4 by the time of diagnosis. At this point, the colon cancer may be much more advanced than it was at the time the patient complained of rectal bleeding or blood in the stool. As a result, the patient now has a much reduced chance of surviving the colon cancer. Mesothelioma is one of the rarer forms of cancer with approximately 2000 cases reported in the UK each year. 2) FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION CYTOLOGY (FNAC):- If the x-ray reveals a build up of fluid in the lining of the lungs or the abdomen your doctor is likely to suggest FNAC. This test involves using a fine needle to take a sample of fluid from either the pleura (the lining of the lungs) or the peritoneum (the lining of the abdomen). The fluid can then be tested in a lab for the presence of cancerous mesothelioma cells. If the FNAC reveals that the fluid contains mesothelioma cells your doctor will be able to discuss treatment options with you.

3) BIOPSY:- If the x-ray reveals any abnormalities in the shape of the pleura or the peritoneum your doctor is likely to recommend a biopsy. This normally involves using a special type of needle to take a sample of cells from the affected areas. These cells can then be analysed in a lab for the presence of cancerous mesothelioma cells. If cancerous cells are discovered your doctor will then be able to talk you through the treatment options available.

Although mesothelioma is one of the rarest types of cancer that does not mean you should neglect the available tests. 4 Major Risk Factors For Small Cell Lung Cancer

Lung cancer can be broken down into two types; small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer. SCLC accounts for approximately 20% of all lung cancers. It is often referred to as oat cell carcinoma because the small cells of the lung have a similar appearance to oats. SCLC develops when there is a rapid and uncontrollable growth in the small cells of the lung that eventually leads to a malignant (cancerous) tumour forming. In this article I will be discussing four risk factors that can contribute to the development of this cancer.

1) SMOKING:- Tobacco smoke is the leading risk factor for all types of lung cancer. It is strongly linked with SCLC and is believed to be responsible for over 90% of cases. Even if you do not smoke personally being around others that do can significantly increase your risk of contracting this type of cancer.

The reason that tobacco smoke is such a strong risk factor for SCLC is that it is full of carcinogens (cancer causing substances). According to Cancer Research UK tobacco smoke can contain up to 70 different carcinogens. These carcinogens have been scientifically proven to damage DNA and alter important genes which can then cause your body's cells to multiply in a rapid and uncontrollable way. When you inhale tobacco smoke (either directly through a cigarette or indirectly through second hand smoke) these carcinogens go straight to your lungs greatly improving the risk of lung cancer and SCLC developing.

2) URANIUM:- Exposure to uranium is thought to increase your risk of developing all types of lung cancer. However, it is most strongly linked with the development of SCLC. A combination of uranium exposure and exposure to tobacco smoke increases your chances of developing SCLC even further.

The reason uranium increases your risk of contracting SCLC is that uranium ores are radioactive. Radon (a gas that is created when uranium breaks down) is also highly radioactive. Research has shown that prolonged exposure to radioactive materials can cause cancer. When people are exposed to uranium it is often inhaled meaning that the radioactive materials are carried directly to the lungs. These radioactive materials can then cause cancerous growth in the small cells of the lungs.

3) ASBESTOS:- Asbestos is most strongly linked with a rare kind of cancer called mesothelioma. However, it has also been linked with increasing the risk for other types of lung cancer including SCLC. Asbestos exposure combined with tobacco smoke greatly increases your small cell lung cancer risk.

The reason asbestos increases your chances of developing SCLC is that when it becomes disturbed very fine fibres are released. These fibres irritate the body's cells and can lead to the development of cancer. If they become lodged in the small cells of the lung they can stimulate the development of SCLC.

4) POOR DIET:- According to Cancer Research UK not getting enough fruit and vegetables in your diet can increase your risk of developing SCLC. The reason for this is that both fruits and vegetables are a rich source of vitamins, anti-oxidants and other chemicals that help prevent cell damage. If you are deficient in any of these then the small cells of your lung may be more susceptible to cancer.

SCLC is not a pleasant condition. However, unlike many other types of cancer where the risk factors are unclear, SCLC has a number of very definite risk factors. In particular smoking has been scientifically proven to significantly increase your small cell lung cancer risk. You can have a direct impact on your chances of getting this cancer. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs and the abdomen. It is one of the less common types of cancer affecting approximately 2000 people each year in the UK and it is almost always caused by asbestos exposure. If it affects the lining of the lungs (the pleura) it is referred to as pleural mesothelioma. In this article I will be outlining three of the most common symptoms for this type of cancer and explaining what you should do if you suspect you have developed this condition.

The pleura (lining of the lungs) is actually comprised of two parts. It has an inner (visceral) layer which is next to the lung and an outer (parietal) layer that covers the chest wall. The two layers slide over each other as we breath and membranes in the lungs often produce lubricating fluid to make this process easier. When pleural mesothelioma develops it causes the inner and outer layers to become thicker and they then press inwards on the lungs. This can lead to a number of undesirable symptoms which I will discuss below:

1) DIFFICULTY BREATHING:- As the inner and outer layers of the pleura start to push against the lungs it may become difficult for you to breathe. This can then lead to your throat becoming hoarse, coughing, problems swallowing and regular feelings of being out of breath.

2) PAIN IN THE CHEST:- As the layers of the pleura push against the lungs this can cause chest pain. You may also feel pain in your shoulders and arms.

3) PLEURAL EFFUSION:- As I mentioned above the membranes of the lungs produce lubricating fluid which allows the layers of the pleura to easily slide against each other. However, when pleural mesothelioma develops the inner and outer layers become thicker and fluid can become trapped more easily. If fluid does become trapped it is referred to as pleural effusion. Pleural effusion can lead to further chest pain and difficulty breathing but often has no symptoms that you will feel.

If you notice any of the above pleural mesothelioma symptoms you should go see your doctor right away. If you have previously been exposed to asbestos then you should inform your doctor of this also. Since this type of cancer is almost always caused by asbestos exposure this information will help them make an accurate diagnosis. Once your doctor is aware of these symptoms they will be able to perform a number of tests and make the call. If their results indicate that you do have pleural mesothelioma they will then be able to suggest the best treatments for your circumstances.

Mesothelioma is a very rare type of cancer and in the majority of cases these symptoms will be down to something much less serious. However, if you notice any of these symptoms and do not go see your doctor then the condition cannot be diagnosed and treated. Even a slight chest pain or a small but small but long lasting cough are possible symptoms. If you notice any symptoms at all go see your doctor right away.

When the alarm rings she slowly gets out of bed, turns on the shower and under the steady stream of warm water, she gently scrubs her body with Ammonia, Formaldehyde and Phenol.

DHT is a biologically active metabolite of the hormone testosterone, formed primarily in the prostate gland, testes, hair follicles, and adrenal glands by the enzyme 5a-reductase by means of reducing the 4,5 double-bond. Increased Cancer Risks Associated With Working The Graveyard Shift

You may have heard some alarming health news recently, about how working the 'graveyard shift' may increase your odds for developing breast or prostate cancer. This story is based on recent research, over the last 20 years, that does, indeed, find an increased rate of breast cancer among women who work at night. But, please keep in mind that high cancer rates, that have been newly discovered in night workers, does not prove that nighttime work, alone, causes one to get cancer.

It is estimated that about 20 percent of the work force in technologically developed countries work the night shift. One of the first people to spot the night shift-cancer connection was Richard Stevens, a cancer epidemiologist and professor at the University of Connecticut Health Center. In 1987 he published a paper suggesting that there may be a a direct correlation to light at night and breast cancer.

Stevens says, "suspiciously, the incidence of breast cancer rates shot up, starting in the 1930's, where industrialized cultures considered it advantageous to progressively increase one's income".

At the time of Steven's first observations, most medical research scientists considered the link, between light at night to increased breast cancer rates, to be pretty weird and wacky. However, over the last 20 years, ongoing research on this disturbing news has continued. There is some compelling evidence that indicates that men working the night shift may also have an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.

It is also interesting to note, that in laboratory research studies with test animals, evidence of the light at night theory, supported Steven's original idea. When light/dark schedules were purposely disrupted, the animals developed more cancerous tumors and died prematurely.

Since the 1980's, the cancer connection to artificial light at night has received quite a bit of attention. There seems to be enough evidence to support the notion that there is a questionable pattern of increased cancer rates in night, and rotational, shift workers.

If you are a night worker do not panic, and determine that you simply must abandon your current job for personal health safety reasons. Also, consider that these ongoing studies are only one small piece of evidence to a very large puzzle. There are many other risk factors involved in developing cancer. In all fairness, other known cancer risks should also be evaluated into this equation as well, like:

2.Daily dietary food and beverage intakes.

What researchers are suggesting, though, is that there seems to be a rather complicated system, of some sort, to lower levels of melatonin and serotonin in correlation to rotational, and night, shift workers. Melatonin is a endocrine system hormone produced by the pineal gland that helps induce sleep, and is gradually released after dark. The pineal gland is located deep in the center of the brain behind the center point in the forehead between the eyes, and is known to have a reaction to sunlight exposure. It is believed that sunlight exposure coming in through the eyes for approximately 20 minutes a day, without contacts, eyeglasses, or sunglasses appears to play an important role in the releasing of melatonin.

Clearly, when normal sleep/wake (also called circadian rhythm) cycles are interrupted with artificial lighting at night there may be a steep health price to pay, for the sake of earning a living. Long-term supplementation with melatonin is not advisable, either, as it may eventually interfere with your body's ability to produce it on its own. Use, instead, one of melatonin's safer precursors like L-tryptophan or 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). Be advised , that L-tryptophan is only obtainable by presription, however, do not let that intimidate you as it is only a simple amino acid.
